President unveils VIA's pivotal development project

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the Velana International Airport (VIA) development project, aimed at accommodating 25 million passengers annually, making it one of the most significant initiatives in the history of the Maldives.

The VIA development project is a crucial component of the air transport industry's 20-year master plan, representing a multibillion-dollar investment. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) states that the upgraded airport will efficiently handle 25 million passengers annually, with a capacity of 4,000 passengers per hour.

This transformative project is poised to elevate the Maldivian economy to new heights, establishing VIA as the exclusive gateway for tourists entering and departing the Maldives, according to MACL.

In addition to expanding the terminal, the project will augment the fuel storage capacity, providing a 100 million liter oil storage facility and a maintenance repair and overhaul facility for flights. The development will adhere to European Union aviation safety standards, with an expanded domestic terminal covering 35,000 acres, capable of accommodating 2,000 passengers per hour and featuring eight gates for domestic flights.

The project will introduce modern amenities such as advanced check-in facilities, self-service kiosks, cafes, restaurants, and convenient transportation services to nearby cities and resorts. A dedicated terminal for budget airlines, equipped with four gates and the ability to handle 1,000 passengers per hour, will also be established. Recognising the demand in the jet market, a separate terminal for jets will be constructed, increasing parking capacity from 34 to 73 aircraft.

The cargo terminal, spanning 25,000 acres, will triple in capacity during its second phase, boasting a throughput capacity of 300,000 metric tonnes. The addition of three water runways will serve five seaplane operators, enhancing connectivity.

The government envisions to carry out an Economic Zone Development Project in Funadhoo near VIA, featuring transit hotels, shopping centers, a convention center, an entertainment complex, and various cafes. This initiative is expected to create numerous business and employment opportunities for the local population.

The first phase of VIA's development is currently underway and nearing completion, promising a completely transformed airport upon project completion.
