10-storey building restriction in Villimale' to be amended: President

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that his administration's will amend the restriction on the construction of 10-storey buildings in Villimale'.

Speaking at a meeting in Villimale', President Dr. Muizzu expressed his aim to permit taller buildings in the area during his tenure as the Mayor of Male' City. He, however, cited a lack of cooperation from the previous government and the Parliament as obstacles to implementing the change. He emphasised the request of the residents for the authorisation of 10-storey buildings in Villimale' and noted his unsuccessful attempts to address the issue with the previous government.

Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu had proposed amendments to the regulations to build taller buildings in Villimale' when he served as the mayor in August 2021. He clarified that such changes could only occur after the planning ministry revised the regulations and submitted them to Parliament. He said that buildings are currently restricted to six floors. He also expressed optimism about the cooperation of the current administration in bringing about the regulatory change.

President Dr. Muizzu outlined plans to enhance services for Villimale' residents, including allocating land in Thilafushi for fibre workers from Villimale'. He stated that all related work would be relocated to Thilafushi and completed within six months. In addition, construction of a 100-bed tertiary hospital in Villimale' has commenced and infrastructure improvements, such as road construction, water and sewerage works, and electricity upgrades, are underway.

Moreover, President Dr. Muizzu addressed his aim to facilitate construction of residencies in Villimale', now granting permission for such initiatives as president. He reassured that the administration is committed to preserving the greenery of Villimale' and emphasised responsible development in the area.
