RACL plans study for drone use to transport cargo

Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL) has stated that a nationwide study will be conducted to explore the feasibility of using drones for cargo services in the Maldives.

Speaking to PSM News, Managing Director at RACL Ahmed Mubeen stated that preparations are underway to undertake an examination of the potential use of drones in cargo transportation. He also disclosed that the study will be a joint effort involving collaboration with Maldives National University (MNU) and a drone service provider based in Dubai.

Additionally, Mubeen outlined that the study will collect data from various islands in the Maldives to assess the demand for cargo services across the country. The findings of the study are expected to provide insights into the urgency and volume of transporting perishable goods to the islands. He also mentioned that a single drone has the capacity to transport approximately 150kg of goods, resulting in cost-effective cargo transportation.

RACL is also preparing to organise a drone show to commemorate this year's Tourism Day. The event is being organised in collaboration with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and the Ministry of Tourism and is anticipated to attract an audience of around 10,000.
