Fisheries Ministry launches study on fish bait containers on vessels

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has begun a study focusing on fish bait containers on fishing vessels in collaboration with the government of Japan.

The ministry has selected the Madaveli Kamana fishing vessel for the study, changing its fish bait container by increasing salt circulation and facilitating the removal of dead fish from the container. The ministry aims to scientifically assess the effectiveness of the modifications. In addition, the ministry stated that the preliminary results indicate promising outcomes, demonstrating the positive impact of the modifications made to the fish bait container.

The government has outlined various initiatives in line with efforts to develop the fisheries sector in the Maldives. Among these is the decision to establish a fisheries education and training college and the decision to mandate the presence of a certified rescue diver on every fishing vessel. The measures aim to promote safety and proficiency within the fishing sector.
