EU commends ECM for presidential election conduct

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM) has commended the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) for its handling of the presidential election in 2023.

In delivering the final report, Chief Observer Nacho Sanchez, expressed appreciation for the professional and transparent organisation of the presidential election by ECM. Despite working with a team of four members during the elections, ECM conducted the electoral process thoroughly and professionally, stated Sanchez.

He noted that the election proceeded without major disturbances in the environment. The voting and counting of votes were characterised by a smooth and peaceful process.

The EU Election Observation's final report consists of 20 recommendations aimed at enhancing the electoral process in future elections. These include suggestions to reinforce political rights, enhance civic and voter education to prevent vote-buying, and restrict the use of state resources in election campaigns. The report also advocates for reforms in campaign finance rules and the further strengthening of enforcement mechanisms. Additionally, the report addresses the dissemination of unfounded information about the election through social media and some newspapers spreading false information.

The EU delegation had been present in Maldives since August 13, 2023, to observe the presidential election, having arrived at the invitation of the Maldives government.
