Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFC) has begun disbursing USD6.5 million in pending payments to fishermen.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister of State for Fisheries and Ocean Resources Mohamed Mutalib said USD6.5 million are being disbursed on January 10. He said USD17 million is still owed to fishermen and that the amount will be paid before the end of the month. He also noted that the new administration has disbursed USD9.6 million to fishermen since taking office.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has stated that the government will work closely with the fishermen. The ministry also expressed commitment to developing the fishing industry by listening to the concerns of the fishermen.
