By-election provisional results to be revealed before 2000hrs

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has announced that the provisional results for the Male' City mayoral and Male' City Council by-elections will be disclosed before 2000hrs on January 13.

Speaking to PSM News, Secretary General of ECM Hassan Zakariyya said that that polling station queues will be closed at 1700hrs. He said that ballot counting will commence at 1730hrs if there are no significant queues at that time and provisional results will be declared before 2000hrs. He also said that the voting process for the by-elections began at 0800hrs and has proceeded peacefully.

Additionally, Zakariyya highlighted the extension of voting time by one hour to assist voters. He also urged eligible voters not to procrastinate and to exercise their right to vote early.

A total of 54,680 eligible individuals have the opportunity to vote in the mayoral by-election. Candidates have urged the public to take part in the voting process, despite adverse weather conditions. The position of Male’ City mayor became vacant after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to assume office in November last year.
