President affirms Maldives' size not a justification for bullying

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has underscored that Maldives, despite its size, does not grant a license for bullying. He further elaborated on the robust and contemporary relationship between Maldives and China, which has evolved over a century and gained strength since the establishment of political ties.

President Muizzu described the foundation of the relationship between China and Maldives, built upon four pillars: mutual respect, sovereign equality, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal matters. Emphasising that China upholds these principles, he highlighted the enduring nature of their diplomatic ties.

Expressing unwavering support for the One China policy, President Muizzu reiterated China's reciprocal commitment to Maldives' sovereignty. Despite the modest size of Maldives' islands in the Indian Ocean, he noted the substantial expanse of its exclusive economic zone. President Muizzu asserted that Maldives stands as the largest shareholder in the Indian Ocean, emphasising that the sea is a collective resource for the surrounding nations, with a significant portion remaining unclaimed.

Affirming Maldives' status as an independent and sovereign nation, President Muizzu stressed the importance of territorial integrity, acknowledging China's profound respect in this regard. He also highlighted the principle of non-interference in internal matters, clarifying that China has no influence on Maldives' domestic affairs.

Reflecting on past instances, President Muizzu criticized improper influences on internal affairs, highlighting the Maldivian people's rejection of such practices. He asserted that such interference should not characterize the relationship between the two countries.

President Muizzu concluded by expressing Maldives' commitment to establishing relations with all countries based on the foundational principles shared with China. He affirmed the willingness to engage with nations that embrace these principles in their diplomatic ties.
