Maldives affected by haze from Indian subcontinent

The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has stated that the Maldives will experience low visibility due to haze in the next four days.

The Met Office stated that the widespread air pollution is set to affect the entire country, with a particularly severe impact expected in the northern and central regions of the Maldives. The agency said that the the air pollution is caused by haze originating from the Indian subcontinent and it has reduced the visibility over the regions.

The Met Office also stated that the visibility has reduced to less than 5km, compared to the typical visibility of over 10km on clear days. The agency highlighted the role of wind direction, speed, and rainfall in changing the visibility ratio, noting, however, that there is no forecast for rain in the next four days.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) indicates that the air quality in the Greater Male' Region has reached an unhealthy level. Measurements indicate that specific areas in the Maldives presently exhibit air quality levels that are unhealthy for individuals sensitive or prone to illness, particularly those with respiratory issues.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) issued a warning regarding the adverse effects of air pollution on the heart and lungs of individuals. As such, the HPA recommends precautionary measures, urging individuals with lung diseases, heart conditions, and allergies to limit outdoor activities, wear masks when outdoors, keep doors and windows closed, and consider using air purifiers.
