Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has emphasised the Maldives' commitment to a policy that seeks to strike a balance between development and environmental objectives. He made the statement while speaking during the closing ceremony of the Maldives Protected and Conserved Areas Forum 2024, jointly organised by the ministry and the United Kingdom's Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP).
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq noted the significant impact of climate change on the Maldives as a small developing country, stressing the urgency of immediate action. He outlined the government's objective to align developmental goals with environmental safety and sustainability. He also highlighted President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pledge to establish three additional biosphere reserves and a nature park in each atoll, marking the initial steps toward ensuring environmental and developmental sustainability.
Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to the Maldives Caron Rohsler underscored the delicate environmental conditions in the Maldives and emphasised the need for collaborative efforts to ensure effective environmental protection.
The four-day forum was attended by over 80 participants from various countries and concluded with notable outcomes. The establishment of nature parks and three additional biosphere reserves in each atoll was announced. In addition, six Marine Science Masters Scholarships were awarded. The forum also unveiled a website and handbook, providing information on protected and conserved areas for public access.
