Gov't to expand bait fish farming in fisheries sector

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has announced the expansion of bait fish farming as a distinct sector within the fisheries industry. He made the remarks during a ceremony inaugurating the rescue divers training programme in Madaveli, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shiyam emphasised the government's commitment to addressing challenges encountered by fishermen in obtaining bait fish, aiming to enhance profitability through modern equipment in bait fish farming. He disclosed plans for a bait fish breeding initiative in Huvadhu Atoll.

Additionally, Minister Shiyam underscored the numerous advantages the expansion would bring to fishermen and expressed his focus on exploring avenues to boost revenue from marine resources in the future. He also said that the government is actively seeking funds for the implementation of these initiatives.

Furthermore, Minister Shiyam reassured fishermen that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu remains dedicated to fulfilling pledges aimed at overcoming challenges within the fishing sector. He noted the primary concern of fishermen regarding difficulties in receiving payment for their catches and affirmed the government's commitment to addressing this issue while fostering overall development in the fishing industry.
