Egyptian company interested in building Hulhumeedhoo bridge

The government has revealed that an Egypt-based company has expressed interest in building the Hithadhoo-Hulhumeedhoo bridge in Addu City.

At a press conference, Principal Secretary to the President Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim said Egypt-based The Arab Contractors has expressed interest in building the project and indicated that it was willing to conduct the surveys for free. Therefore, the Economic Council has decided to award the project to the company.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to build a bridge connecting Hulhumeedhoo to the rest of Addu City. His administration has included the bridge project in the roadmap for his first 14 weeks in office and allocated USD2 million in the state budget for the project.

Earlier this month, the government stated that preparations are underway for the handover of technical and detailed feasibility and design work required for the construction of the Hithadhoo-Hulhumeedhoo bridge.

Addu consists of four islands with Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo particularly far apart from the rest of the islands. The residents were promised by previous governments that Addu would be developed into a city in the full sense of the word by connecting Hulhumeedhoo to the other islands with a bridge, but the project never commenced until this administration.
