Waste management as crucial as development: Gov't

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has highlighted the importance of strengthening waste management systems alongside carrying out major development projects. Minister Thoriq made the remark in an interview with PSM News regarding his visit to Addu City.

In the interview, Minister Thoriq said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu aims to solve the problems in Addu City to the extent that the residents are satisfied with the results. The initiatives include establishing a modern waste management system and improving water supply and electricity services.

Additionally, Minister Thoriq said that his highest priority is to fix the issues related to electricity and waste management in Addu City, which would require the involvement of experts. However, he noted the difficulties in finding experts in the relevant fields in the Maldives.

As such, Minister Thoriq said there are only a few technically capable individuals in waste management in the country. He also said that local councils need training in waste management and therefore, higher education and training opportunities will be opened to train more professionals in waste management.

During his trip to Addu City, Minister Thoriq met the city council and visited the sites of Fenaka Corporation Limited and Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) and listened to the concerns of the employees. He also visited the parts of the beach facing erosion and said the government will take immediate measures to address the issues.
