Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has extended congratulations to the candidates that secured party tickets in the primary election of the ruling coalition, comprising the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress, for the upcoming parliamentary election.
In a post on X, Vice President Latheef praised the winners of the primary and commended other candidates that contested the election. He also conveyed his best wishes for success to the candidates the secured their tickets in the upcoming parliamentary election.
The ruling coalition's primary election, the largest ever held in the Maldives, saw a total of 71,597 members from 73 constituencies casting their votes. Prior to the primary, 13 candidates from the coalition had already secured their tickets, either uncontested or after the withdrawal of competing candidates.
Additionally, the ruling coalition decided not to conduct primaries for three constituencies in the parliamentary election, which included the leaders of Jumhooree Party (JP) Qasim Ibrahim, Maldives National Party (MNP) Mohamed Nazim, and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) Ahmed Shiyam Mohamed. The Chairperson of People's National Congress stated that the decision was made out of respect for the leaders of the three parties collaborating with the government.
The parliamentary election is scheduled for March 17, with the Elections Commission of the Maldives opening the opportunity to submit candidacy forms starting from January 30.
