ECM ready for possible parliamentary election postponement

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has affirmed its preparedness for the upcoming parliamentary election, even in the event of a potential postponement.

ECM scheduled the parliamentary election for March 17, which coincides with the seventh day of Ramadan. The electoral body acknowledged potential administrative challenges tied to holding the election during Ramadan. As such, political parties have voiced concerns about conducting the election during Ramadan.

In response, an amendment to the Elections General Act has been proposed, aiming to shift the parliamentary election to a date after the month of Ramadan. The amendment proposes to change Article 43 of the Elections General Act to dictate that no election should be held on a day of Ramadan. If an election coincides with the month of Ramadan, the election shall be held 10 days after the end of Ramadan.

Speaking to PSM News, Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb acknowledged potential financial difficulties if the election was rescheduled for after Ramadan and expressed hope that the Parliament would address the issue. Habeeb noted that election-related decisions, excluding voting, would be finalised before Ramadan, but a postponement might necessitate refresher training for officials. He highlighted that a change in the election date would also impact the number of eligible voters, potentially reopening the opportunity for re-registration.

Additionally, Habeeb expressed confidence in the capabilities of ECM employees, assuring that they would manage the election process smoothly, even in the case of a delay. He affirmed the commission's commitment to adhering to the law and fulfilling its responsibilities as required.
