Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has revealed that the national airline, Maldivian, is gearing up to introduce wide-body aircraft for its flights commencing in September.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Ameen acknowledged the challenges faced by Maldivian under the new administration. He cited a decline in workforce and increased expenses as factors contributing to the airline's financial downturn. Despite the challenges, he emphasised the imperative of revitalising the national airline, identifying promising opportunities for its development.
Additionally, Minister Ameen disclosed plans to make Maldivian profitable by expanding its international operations. He noted ongoing preparations for the expansion, including the procurement of the necessary wide-body aircraft required for international flights.
Furthermore, Minister Ameen highlighted the formation of a dedicated team within Maldivian tasked with identifying potential international destinations. While not all destinations will be launched simultaneously, he assured that new routes will be added progressively as the aircraft become available.
The decision to employ wide-body aircraft for national airline flights is part of the government's strategy to increase tourist arrivals. The Week 14 Roadmap of the administration outlines the incorporation of wide-body aircraft into the operations of the national airline, backed by a business plan prepared by the government.
