ECM signs MoUs with with five entities for parliamentary election

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has signed Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) with five state institutions to receive essential support for the upcoming parliamentary election.

The entities that have signed MoUs with ECM include the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the Maldives Police Service (MPS), the Department of National Registration (DNR), the Local Government Authority (LGA), and the Maldives Post Limited (MPL).

During the signing ceremony, Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb emphasised the pivotal roles these institutions will play in ensuring the success of the parliamentary election. He highlighted the need for the cooperation of CSC in recruiting officials and establishing focal points in the islands. He said that the assistance of the MPS is crucial for conducting a safe and smooth election, especially in securing the delivery of ballot boxes and papers to the islands.

Additionally, Habeeb stressed the importance of the support of the DNR for a seamless re-registration process and acknowledged the contribution of the LGA to cost-effective election-related arrangements on the islands. He expressed hope for continued assistance under the agreement. He also said that the agreement with Maldives Post is expected to facilitate the distribution of ballot boxes and papers to the islands.

Meanwhile, President of CSC Mohamed Nasih emphasised the significance of state institutions providing assistance and cooperation to ECM. He pledged full cooperation and support in recruiting necessary officials and establishing focal points. He commended the previous work done by CSC employees in past elections and encouraged collaboration with ECM for a successful parliamentary election.

Moreover, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau assured that MPS is preparing for any eventualities during the upcoming parliamentary election. As such, he said that a dedicated committee has been formed and an election commander appointed, ensuring that MPS will fulfill its responsibilities as demonstrated in the previous presidential election.

ECM has scheduled the upcoming parliamentary election for March 17.
