Gov't prepares to resume handing over 4,000 flats

The government has begun preparations to resume the process of handing over the first 4,000 flats under the Gedhoruveriya Housing Scheme.

Last November, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) ordered the previous government to suspend its work to allocate the flats after public outrage rose over alleged corruption in how applicants were chosen for the final list of recipients. The new administration is working with the ACC as it continues its investigation.

The ACC stated that it has now terminated its notice to suspend all activities related to the allocation of 4,000 flats under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme. The commission also stated that it has directed the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development to take into consideration certain matters when proceeding with the allocation of the flats. Afterwards, the housing ministry stated that it is now preparing to resume the process of handing over the flats and that details will be provided within a week.

Speaking to PSM News, Minister Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed said that flats will be handed over to recipients whose application forms are devoid of any issues. He added that special arrangements will be undertaken for forms presenting issues, as the ministry is committed to addressing concerns pointed out by the ACC in the forms.

The ACC has instructed the relevant authorities to review the problematic application forms in a way that does not alter the points awarded to the other forms. The commission also directed the authorities to apply the same standards and not discriminate when reviewing all the forms.

Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has stated that it will begin signing the agreements with flat recipients within a few days after the investigation is completed.
