President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that the Maldives government will not tolerate any nation undermining its sovereignty. He made the remarks during the Presidential Statement at this year's opening session of the Parliament.
In his address, President Dr. Muizzu drew attention to the Presidential Address delivered to the first Maldivian Parliament on December 22, 1932, 91 years ago, on behalf of Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen Iskander III. He emphasised the significance of Islam, independence, and self-governance as blessings, referencing Shamsuddeen's Presidential Address.
Underlining the pivotal role of religion and freedom, President Dr. Muizzu said that Islam and the sovereignty and freedom of Maldivian citizens are the two fundamental pillars shaping the state and future of the Maldivian community.
Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu also highlighted substantial public support for his government's policies, particularly regarding the withdrawal of foreign military forces, reclaiming the southern ocean territory, and annulling agreements with other nations that could compromise Maldives' sovereignty. He disclosed that these initiatives have already been set in motion since assuming office.
Furthermore, President Dr. Muizzu stressed the need for the Maldives to enhance its modern military capabilities across land, sea, and air to safeguard the nation. He cited historical leaders such as Bodu Thakurufaanu, Dhon Bandaarain, Bodu Rasgefaanu, and Iskandhar Mahaaradhun, emphasising their focus on strengthening the military. He also expressed confidence in the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), highlighting its capability to safeguard the Maldives Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around the clock.
Moreover, President Dr. Muizzu underscored the government's commitment to prioritising the citizens and the country while upholding the main principle of protecting independence and sovereignty. He also emphasised the government's special attention to fostering Maldivian nationalism.
