President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government has disbursed over USD21 million to fishermen, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to bolster the fisheries sector in the Maldives.
Delivering his Presidential Address, Dr. Muizzu outlined plans to expand the industry, introducing new fisheries to enhance economic benefits across the region. He also disclosed intentions to broaden the reach of fisheries products by exploring foreign markets.
Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu prioritised the settlement of outstanding payments, noting that over USD21 million has already been disbursed. In a significant move, he highlighted the Cabinet's decision to transform the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) into a separate entity. He also said that it aligns with the government's commitment to involve fishermen in MIFCO's management, with the appointment of a fisherman as a board member underway.
Furthermore, President Dr. Muizzu outlined plans to compile a register of fishermen this year, aiming to enhance the economic and social opportunities provided by the government. He said that a specialised training programme has been initiated, ensuring that at least one crew member on every fishing boat obtains a rescue diver level certificate. He also specified that the first phase of training would encompass 50 fishermen.
