Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has announced plans to present an assessment report of the existing airport infrastructure to the Economic Council in February.
Minister Ameen highlighted delays in completing airport constructions post-transition, with some announced projects yet to commence. He said that ensuring the continuation of ongoing projects remains a top priority for the government, with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu committing to the construction of six additional airports. He also assured that work on these projects will proceed uninterrupted, with a detailed schedule to be announced in the future.
Additionally, Minister Ameen acknowledged existing issues across numerous airports, He emphasised the importance of addressing the issues. As such, he said that a thorough assessment report is underway, aimed at resolving the challenges, with plans to deliver the report to the Economic Council within the next two weeks.
Currently, the Maldives boasts 17 operational airports, including four international and seven regional facilities. In addition, the government has sanctioned the introduction of a helicopter service to facilitate swift access to medical services and other urgent requirements.
