President deems opposing to protect Maldivian waters disheartening

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed disappointment over individuals working against the preservation of Maldives' economic zone. Speaking at a gathering in Veymandoo, Thaa Atoll, the president outlined his endeavors to safeguard the nation's independence and sovereignty, expressing regret at the criticism received when initiating these efforts.

Highlighting the vastness of Maldives' sea area, totaling 974,000 acres, the President underscored that while the islands may be small, the economic potential within this expansive maritime domain remains largely untapped. He emphasised the need for comprehensive management to harness the economic benefits for the people.

President Muizzu asserted that with proper utilisation through continuous and extensive fishing, the maritime industry could surpass tourism in profitability. He reassured the public that concerted efforts to protect and maximize the use of Maldives' maritime area are in the pipeline and will be implemented soon.

However, the President questioned the motives of those opposing these initiatives, questioning their allegiance to the nation. He urged the populace to consider the importance of preserving the country's independence and sovereignty, underscoring the need to encourage discussions on enhancing self-empowerment.

Furthermore, President Muizzu outlined Maldives' foreign policy as rooted in friendship, asserting that the nation harbors no hostility towards any country. He lamented attempts by certain individuals to create unfounded animosities, noting the people's collective desire to progress with independence and economic empowerment.

Addressing ongoing efforts to reclaim lost sea territory, President Muizzu underscored that the Maldives' economic zone should remain free from external claims, asserting that everything within it rightfully belongs to the Maldives.
