Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has said that the long-awaited vision of development, sought after by the public, has begun to materialise under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's leadership. He made the remarks during a gathering with residents of Veymandhoo during the President's official visit to Thaa Atoll.
Speaking at the gathering, Minister Adam Shareef noted the transition through various presidential administrations over the past two decades, emphasising the approach of the current government in closely engaging with the public. Reflecting on the economic landscape of the Maldives, he underscored the fiscal challenges inherited from the previous government, highlighting depleted treasury reserves and mounting corporate debts. He, however assured that the current government is diligently working to extend support to citizens through diverse avenues.
Additionally, Minister Adam Shareef referenced skepticism regarding infrastructure initiatives, such as the underwater tunnel proposed within the Ras Male' development project, one of the nation's biggest endeavors. He expressed confidence in President Muizzu's capacity to realise such initiatives, citing the President's engineering and international expertise.
Furthermore, Minister Adam Shareef lamented the hindrances to progress posed by the Parliament of the Maldives, accusing it of impeding development rather than fostering it. He pointed out the exclusion of President Muizzu's development agenda from the budget and the refusal to endorse academically qualified ministers in the Cabinet as notable concerns.
Moreover, Minister Adam Shareef stressed the necessity of securing a super majority in Parliament to advance the nation's developmental agenda in alignment with the aspirations of the populace. He emphasised the imperative of parliamentary cooperation for the successful execution of major projects, cautioning against potential obstacles in the absence of such collaboration.
