Land officially handed over for Cat Shelter Project

The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has officially handed over the designated land for a cat shelter to Male' City Council (MCC). The project to build a cat shelter in Male' was awarded to MCC in January.

The animal welfare ministry has allocated 5,000 acres of land from Hulhumale' Phase 2 to MCC for this project. Encompassing a cat cafe, a veterinary clinic, and a cat shop, the initiative is designed to be executed in multiple phases, as outlined by the city council. While the initial phase will focus on the construction of the cat shelter, future plans involve expanding the facilities to accommodate domestic animals and birds. A total of 18,000 acres of land is expected to be allocated for the project in the near future.

The establishment of this cat shelter is anticipated to provide a lasting solution to the issue of cat overcrowding in the city. The government envisions replicating such facilities across the country, according to statements from the ministry.

Notably, the creation of a pet care facility to address the growing population of stray cats in the city aligns with the objectives outlined in the President's Week 14 roadmap.
