President announces 3 more hectares reclaimed from Ungoofaaru lagoon

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans for an additional 3 hectares of land reclamation from Ungoofaaru lagoon.

The announcement was made in response to a question posed by Ahmed Shiyam, Dhulihurage, Ungoofaaru, during the "Raees ge Javaabu" series.

Shiyam inquired about the President's commitment to reclaim as much land as possible in the Ungoofaaru lagoon, referencing a promise made during the presidential campaign. In response, President Muizzu affirmed the ongoing efforts, stating that reclamation will continue as much as possible, with an additional three hectares to be reclaimed from the lagoon.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling all pledges made during his term.

The reclamation project in Ungoofaaru lagoon is being carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which was awarded the contract in 2021. However, the work commenced in January 2024. The state-owned company is tasked with reclaiming 10 hectares of land as well as constructing 1,150m of revetment and 75m of groin for the shore protection of the island.
