Maldives calls for robust ocean governance beyond national boundaries

Maldives has advocated for a robust ocean governance mechanism extending beyond national jurisdictions, as stated by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheryna Abdul Samad during the 7th Indian Ocean Conference in Perth, Australia.

Addressing the conference, State Minister highlighted the critical role of the ocean for island states, particularly underscoring its significance as a lifeline and integral to the identity of nations like the Maldives. Speaking on the panel titled "Our Blue Future - How can the Indian Ocean Region work with Island States to Safeguard the Health of our Shared Ocean Resources?", she stressed the ocean's paramount importance for the survival of nations.

Underlining the urgent need for action to address threats and maintain the delicate balance of the ocean, State Minister Sheryna emphasised the shared responsibility of nations in protecting this vital resource. She advocated for a robust ocean governance mechanism that goes beyond national jurisdictions.

Acknowledging the Maldives' commitment to ocean conservation through initiatives such as Marine Protected Areas and sustainable fisheries management, State Minister Sheryna also pointed out the capacity and resource constraints faced by island states. She urged larger nations to provide greater support to overcome these challenges.

In conclusion, State Minister Sheryna reaffirmed the Maldives' dedication to safeguarding the ocean and called for collective action to ensure a sustainable future where oceans thrive.

The Indian Ocean Conference, initiated in 2016, stands as a flagship consultative forum for Indian Ocean region countries, addressing mutual concerns. Organised annually, the conference is led by the India Foundation in collaboration with regional partners.
