Gov't opens for taxi drivers to enroll in registry

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has opened the opportunity for taxi drivers to enroll in the National Register of Drivers, as outlined in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s Week 14 Roadmap.

In an announcement, the transport ministry stated that interested individuals can register through the ministry's SIMS portal. Previously, the government highlighted the necessity of establishing the register to address the informal nature of taxi driving, which has hindered drivers from accessing essential services such as loans and providing income documentation to institutions. Taxi drivers will now be formally recognised as income earners, with the register.

Additionally, the Cabinet deliberated on enhancing the taxi system in the Maldives to align it with international standards. As such, the government has requested a comprehensive proposal to improve taxi services in order to foster a more civilised society.
