Male' City Council assumes responsibility for cleaning mosques

The Male' City Council has decided to assume the responsibility of cleaning of mosques across the Greater Male' Region.

During a meeting at the Male' City Council, Mayor Adam Azim addressed administrative concerns, noting dissatisfaction with the quality of work carried out by external contractors. Specifically, he highlighted shortcomings in mosque cleaning services, prompting the decision of the council to shift responsibility from external firms to the city council itself.

Additionally, Mayor Azim assured that the transition would not result in additional costs, citing the current monthly expenditure of USD143 million by external contractors compared to the projected USD136 million cost for in-house cleaning. He also expressed intentions to transition council-hired employees into civil service positions.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor of Male' City Council Ahmed Nareesh echoed concerns about mosque cleanliness, noting a pattern of merging cleaning efforts for clusters of mosques every five or six. He also addressed public grievances regarding inadequate sanitation in mosque facilities.

Additionally, Nareesh criticised the lack of oversight over contracted employees, emphasising the need for proper monitoring and reporting, while acknowledging the previous challenges faced by the Civil Service Commission in recruiting civil servants under the prior government.
