Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has acknowledged the persistent challenges in waste management, attributing them to a lack of a comprehensive approach. The minister made these remarks during a workshop convened to devise strategies and action plans for resource-efficient waste management practices.
Highlighting the efforts of the former government in addressing the issue, Minister Thoriq acknowledged the previous administration's attempts to find a viable solution. However, he emphasised that the problem persisted due to the inadequacy of a sustainably conservative system.
Minister Thoriq further conveyed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to resolving the issue, stating that the current government is implementing sustainable practices. He assured that waste management plans will soon be implemented across all islands in the Maldives. He also underscored the substantial link between effective waste management and economic development. He explained how the cleanliness of tourist islands, particularly those with guest houses, directly impacts the tourism industry.
The working group meeting, attended by representatives from 5 islands across 13 atolls and 35 individuals, discussed government regulations for ensuring efficient waste disposal. To recognise the participants' completion of the workshop, Minister Thoriq presented certificates.
Efficient and safe waste disposal aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's pivotal policy, aiming to establish waste management systems in 100 islands by the year's end.
