Minister of Education Ismail Shafeeu has emphasised the urgent need to establish six additional schools in Hulhumale'. His statement came in response to inquiries from parliament members regarding the required number of new schools in the area.
Minister Shafeeu outlined plans to build four schools in Hulhumale' Phase II, alongside the ongoing development of one school. Additionally, he assured that, similar to Phase II, two more schools would be constructed in Hulhumale' Phase I. However, he clarified that this expansion does not imply transitioning existing schools into single-session schools.
Currently, primary and secondary education in Hulhumale' is provided solely by Salahuddin School. However, due to the growing population, the school faces challenges in accommodating more students. Despite being designed for a maximum of 1700 students, Salahuddin School has received over 800 requests for admission, leading to overcrowding.
In response to the increasing demand, Salahuddin School has decided to transition to a double-session school starting from the upcoming academic year. Minister Shafeeu acknowledged that this decision goes against the government's policy of maintaining single-session schools but explained that it was approved due to the lack of alternatives.
The minister announced that the project to establish two additional schools would commence within the current year, reaffirming the government's commitment to addressing the educational needs of Hulhumale' residents.
