Minister unveils plan to set up a police station on every island within two years

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has announced plans to establish police stations in all inhabited islands within the next two years. He made this announcement while addressing questions from parliamentarians concerning the government's strategy to address the absence of police stations across the Maldives.

Minister Ihusaan revealed that upon assuming office, the government identified 46 islands without police stations. He emphasised that scheduled plans are in motion for the establishment of correctional facilities, with the goal of having police stations operational in all inhabited islands by 2027.

Furthermore, Minister Ihusaan noted that some islands currently operate police stations under rental arrangements. The government intends to enhance these facilities after initiating services in islands lacking police stations.

Additionally, Minister of Defense Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon affirmed that due to the high costs associated with constructing concrete structured police stations, efforts are being made to establish pre-fabricated designed police stations.

The Ministry of Defense is actively working to establish these new police stations as part of their initiative to decentralise services. Already, 19 police posts have been opened, in line with the government's Week 14 roadmap.
