President praises stable food prices this Ramadan, credits gov't action

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reassured the public that basic food items are not running out and their prices have not increased significantly due to the proactive measures.

In an exclusive interview with PSM News, President Dr. Muizzu stated that there would be no price hikes before Ramadan and highlighted the collaborative efforts with relevant authorities and companies to stabilise prices. He also expressed his commitment to maintaining stable prices throughout the remaining days of Ramadan.

The State Trading Organisation (STO) is playing a crucial role by selling essential items for Ramadan. Every year, STO imports onions, potatoes, and eggs, selling them at wholesale and retail prices in the Maldivian market. President Dr. Muizzu has guaranteed affordable prices for common food items during Ramadan. The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has also compiled a list of basic food items and is working with STO to ensure their availability and monitor prices in the Maldivian market.

President Dr. Muizzu aims on improving the economic situation in the Maldives by addressing the most critical needs of the public. He has implemented policies to make this Ramadan as convenient as possible. As such, he declared the last 10 days of Ramadan as public holidays annually to uphold Islamic principles, promote religious activities, and prioritise religious matters. In addition, basic goods will be distributed to every household throughout the month of Ramadan.

Traditionally, prices of essential goods tend to increase during Ramadan, sparking concerns about shortages. The increase is particularly noticeable with items like onions, potatoes and eggs. However, this Ramadan has been different, with no signs of shortages in basic food items. The prices have also decreased for many items compared to the beginning of the month. The decrease can be attributed to increased supplies in the market.
