If economic circumstances require printing currency, it should be done: Solih

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the option of printing currency should be considered if the economic circumstances require to do so.

Addressing attendees at a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) campaign gathering in Hulhumale' Phase II, Solih cited the printing of currency as a measure undertaken during his administration to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also been vocal in his criticism of the policies implemented by the current government.

The previous administration printed USD532 million over the span of three years, according to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in response, denounced the action, stating that the previous government printed currency regardless of the financial situation of the Maldives. He further emphasised that the previous administration printed more currency than had been done in the past four decades. MMA has also indicated that the current administration halted the printing of currency and implemented spending cuts upon assuming office.
