President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has disclosed that the implementation of 527 projects, including those that faced delays due to various reasons during the transition of government, is still ongoing. He made these remarks at a campaign rally held in Hulhumale' Phase II.
Addressing the gathering, President Dr. Muizzu responded to allegations from the opposition regarding stalled development projects under the previous government. He provided insights into the progress being made across various sectors in structural development.
The President outlined that, at the end of the previous government's tenure, numerous projects, including 27 water and sewerage projects, 30 harbor construction, land reclamation, and beach protection projects, as well as 17 road construction projects, had been halted. Additionally, 84 projects for constructing sports facilities, 90 projects related to education, 20 projects for mosque construction, seven projects for airport development, and 220 housing projects across 11 islands were also affected.
President Muizzu elaborated on the reasons behind the delays in these projects. He noted that the previous government had made errors in drafting agreements and awarding projects, often prioritizing political motives over comprehensive planning.
Furthermore, the President highlighted instances of mismanagement and financial irregularities under the previous administration. He described how some companies were coerced into giving money to certain party members, signed agreements, received advance payments, and then abandoned the projects. Subsequently, other companies were brought in, provided advance payments, and faced similar outcomes, added the president.
President Dr. Muizzu's remarks underscored the challenges inherited by the current government and emphasised the ongoing efforts to rectify and advance stalled projects for the benefit of the nation.
