The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced its plans to commence supplying renewable energy-based electricity to five of the islands.
Speaking to PSM News, Managing Director of STELCO Hussain Fahmy said that the initiative of STELCO, announced earlier this year, targets the provision of battery electricity to at least five islands by year-end, with a broader goal of extending renewable energy services to a total of 33 islands. He also said that agreements to initiate renewable energy electricity services on five islands are expected to be finalised between May and June.
Additionally, Fahmy elaborated that the efforts of STELCO will initially focus on generating sufficient renewable energy to power islands across Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, and Vaavu Atolls. He also said that the company aims to ensure a minimum of 12 hours of battery electricity supply per day to these islands by year-end, with intentions to expand this service to more islands in the future.
Furthermore, Fahmy highlighted that transitioning to renewable energy sources will contribute to reducing fuel costs. He also said that it marks a significant step towards sustainability for STELCO and the communities it serves.
