The Maldives reiterates the call for a permanent ceasefire for Palestine and urging for the sustained provision of humanitarian aid. The statement was made by the Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, on behalf of the nation, during the 15th session of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Summit Conference, under the theme "Enhancing Unity and Solidarity Through Dialogue for Sustainable Development". The summit will be held between May 4 and 5.
In his statement, Minister Dr. Shaheem underscored the critical importance of a permanent ceasefire and ensuring the consistent delivery of humanitarian aid, while expressing concerns regarding the United Nations (UN) Security Council's delay in promptly addressing the ongoing genocide perpetrated against Palestinians. Additionally, the Maldives urged the Islamic nations to take more significant action and to exert more effort, aiming to hold Israel accountable for its inhuman crimes against innocent Palestinians.
Furthermore, the Maldives calls for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. On this stance, it revealed its unwavering support for the admission of Palestine as a full member state of the United Nations (UN).
Highlighting the ongoing genocide against the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, the Maldives expressed intent to collaborate with the Gambia in presenting a case against the ethnic cleansing, before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). It further emphasised the necessity of ending any form of disrespect or insults directed towards Islam, respecting each other and disseminating credible information.
The Islamic Summit, held in every three years, aims to discuss policies and address various challenges the Muslims face continuously.
