Nurses perform national duty as they provide frontline services

International Nurses Day is annually observed on May 12, serving as a tribute to honour the diligent and the dedicated foremost services of nurses, while aiming to acknowledge and address the countless challenges they encounter at all levels. The theme for commemorating the International Nurses Day is "Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care."

Nurses continue to stand firm in the frontline when individuals are admitted, ensuring they receive cutting edge treatment with compassion. The efforts of nurses can be observed, as they perform a national duty of providing healthcare services in a benevolent manner, despite not being a family member. Their hard work and services must be well appreciated as they consistently deliver exceptional services despite the personal challenges they face. Nurses should be saluted for their dedicated services as they continue to treat and assist patients for long hours away from their families.

A common misconception regrading the role of nurses is that they only have to follow and treat patients according to the instructions given by doctors. However, nursing is a completely different healthcare profession. Nurses regularly monitor the patient's condition and ensure that patients adhere to the doctor's instructions. They additionally are always prepared to assist patients in emergency situations.

Nursing can be considered as a feminine profession in the Maldives as women have been actively working in the field for a long period of time. However, it can be observed that men have also started stepping into the field as per their interests.

The advancements of the nursing field will undoubtedly contribute to a significant positive impact in the medical field, as nurses are the backbones of the healthcare systems. The provision of nursing opportunities to Maldivians who studied nursing will assist to reduce the outflow of money from the circular flow model.

Currently, special examinations are being conducted to evaluate the proficiency of nurses, aiming to assess their competence and provide additional training opportunities. While nursing can be studied in the Maldives National University (MNU), scholarship opportunities can also be attained to study nursing abroad
