Speaker vows new parliament will upload rule of law

Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla highlighted the pivotal responsibilities of upholding the rule of law and ensuring the independence of the judiciary and legal framework as key roles entrusted to the new parliament. He made these remarks during the inaugural session of his presidency of the parliament.

Abdul Raheem notably expressed heartfelt gratitude towards President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for nominating him as the Speaker of the Parliament. He underscored that the new parliament is being formed at a critical time for the country, with President Muizzu taking office with the intention of bringing revolutionary change to the Maldives through the implementation of significant new governmental policies.

Furthermore, Abdul Raheem affirmed that the critical responsibilities of the parliament can be strategically reinforced through joint collaboration with the administration. He stressed the importance of introducing new laws, amending and revising existing ones, and nullifying outdated laws that do not align with modern times. He also emphasised the need for parliamentary debates and work to allow for differences of opinion and viewpoints while maintaining the dignity and respect of the parliament, adhering to the rules and codes of conduct.

Additionally, he delineated the paramount importance of all parliamentarians proactively working to a level where the people will wholeheartedly accept and support their work.
