President concludes his visit to India, bilateral ties to remain strong

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has concluded his official visit to India. The president travelled to India upon the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers of the Government of India.

Upon arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India, President Dr. Muizzu was received by one of the senior most officials currently at then Ministry of External Affairs Pavan Kapoor, High Commissioner of the Maldives to India Ibrahim Shaheeb as well as High Commissioner of the Republic of India to the Maldives Munu Mahawar.

During the official visit, President Dr. Muizzu attended the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister Modi and the Council of Ministers of the Government of India. Prime Minister Modi is the first three-term prime minister to be sworn in since Former Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Indian President, Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Prime Minister Modi during the ceremony, which was attended by thousands of dignitaries, including leaders from neighbouring countries.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, President Dr. Muizzu participated in a family photograph with Indian Prime Minister Modi and other Heads of State and Government.

Following the oath-taking ceremony, President Dr. Muizzu attended the official banquet hosted by President of India Droupadi Murmu, honouring the presence of leaders of neighbouring countries attending the swearing-in-ceremony of the Prime Minister of India.

The President was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer and the Minister of Finance Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq.

During the president's visit to India, India's Union Minister Dr. Subramanyam Jaishankar paid a courtesy call on President Dr. Muizzu on June 10. The meeting took place in Taj Palace Hotel, just hours after the swearing-in ceremony.

The meeting focused on bilateral collaboration, with both the President and the Minister expressing their eagerness to strengthen the long-standing relations between the nations and cooperation in areas of shared values and mutual interest.

President Dr. Muizzu expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister Modi and the government of India for their ongoing assistance to the Maldives over the years. He also mentioned that it was an honour to be present at the swearing-in ceremony. Meanwhile, the minister appreciated the President for gracing the swearing-in event with his presence.

The President and the Minister concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to boosting Maldives-India collaboration in the coming years.

Furthermore, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with the President of India Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi during his official visit to India.

At the meeting, both leaders emphasised the importance of working together for the development and prosperity of both nations. President Murmu noted that President Dr Muizzu's presence at the swearing-in ceremony on such short notice demonstrates the confidence both countries enjoy in their bilateral ties. She also congratulated him on securing a super majority in the parliamentary election and highlighted the Indian Government's "Neighbourhood First Policy," expressing eagerness to contribute to development assistance for the Maldives.

President Dr. Muizzu thanked President Murmu for the hospitality and expressed gratitude for India's dedicated assistance to the Maldives. The president committed to preserving the close and historic ties with India, and conveyed that he looks forward to further strengthening and enhancing the existing relations between the two countries.

Following the meeting, President Dr Muizzu signed the guest book at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

President Dr. Muizzu extended his congratulations to Prime Minister Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), for their victory in the Indian General Elections of 2024.
