Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has underscored that the present administration will firmly protect the interests of fishermen engaged in Yellowstripe scad fishing, ensuring that lane fishing does not jeopardize their livelihoods. These remarks were delivered during his visit to an area where the Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU) was protesting against the issuance of permits for lane fishing.
Notably, BKMU's main concern centered around companies obtaining permits for lane fishing, which they argued would inflict significant damage by obstructing their fishing nets. Minister Shiyam personally addressed these concerns during his visit, clarifying that no such permits have been issued by any governmental bodies. He reassured the fishermen that the present administration remains committed to prioritizing their interests above all.
In his address, Minister Shiyam affirmed that the present administration has been actively fulfilling its promises to the fishing community since taking office. He highlighted efforts being made to support the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO), which currently faces challenges in purchasing yellowfin tuna due to financial constraints. Minister Shiyam assured that steps are being taken to improve MIFCO's financial position.
During his interaction with the fishermen, Minister Shiyam also addressed their concerns regarding the availability and affordability of fuel. He pledged to work closely with the State Trading Organisation (STO) to resolve issues related to obtaining cheap oil, aiming to alleviate the financial burdens faced by fishermen.
