President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed India’s role as a “trusted development partner” of the Maldives, underscoring the enduring strength of bilateral relations between the two nations. His remarks, issued in a statement marking India’s Independence Day, highlighted the longstanding ties between the governments and peoples of both countries.
In a message shared via social media, President Muizzu extended greetings to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the people of India. He expressed his hope that the occasion would rekindle the spirit of success and independence associated with the day’s celebrations.
“May the festivities of this day echo the spirit and achievements of the people of India,” President Muizzu stated.
The message also served to reinforce India’s significance in the Maldives’ development trajectory. President Muizzu described the neighbouring country as a “reliable partner” and acknowledged the growing diplomatic and interpersonal engagement between the two sides.
“India has always been a trusted development partner of the Maldives,” he stated. “I deeply appreciate the increase in high-level exchanges and people-to-people contact between our countries, which underscores the strong cooperation we have built.”
The relationship between the Maldives and India predates the formal establishment of diplomatic ties on 1 November 1965. Historical trade relations laid the foundation for a partnership that has since evolved into a multifaceted alliance.
That foundation has continued to strengthen under President Muizzu’s administration. On 25 July, Prime Minister Modi visited the Maldives to participate in the country’s Independence Day celebrations. The visit, marked by the finalisation of several agreements and substantive discussions, was cited by Maldivian government officials as further consolidating the relationship between the two nations.
