Minister requests resorts to register for WAMCO waste disposal service

Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has called on all resorts to support the waste disposal service provided by Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO). Minister Faisal made this request during the inaugural ceremony held by WAMCO to launch the new waste disposal service for resorts.

In his speech at the ceremony, Minister Faisal highlighted that resorts have traditionally managed their waste by hiring private companies, a method that is not sustainable. He emphasised that WAMCO will now offer waste disposal services to resorts that register with the company and urged all resorts to sign up for the service.

Minister Faisal also stated that the launch of this service aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's policy of making government-owned companies financially profitable. He noted that WAMCO stands to earn significant income from providing waste disposal services to resorts.

Addressing the ongoing issue of improper waste management at some resorts, where waste is either dumped into the ocean or not taken to designated waste transfer stations, the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has collaborated with WAMCO and resort operators to develop a sustainable solution.

WAMCO launched this pilot project targeting three atolls: Raa Atoll, Baa Atoll, and Lhaviyani Atoll. The pilot project aims to establish responsible waste management practices at the selected resorts, with potential for expansion based on the project's success. The primary goal of the service is to address the challenges resorts face in transporting waste to WAMCO's regional transfer stations.
