Minister assures gov't committed to solving debt issues and boosting tourism

Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has assured the current administration is committed to addressing the national debt and ensuring the country does not go bankrupt. He made this statement during a rally held by the main ruling party, the People’s National Congress (PNC).

In his speech, Minister Faisal emphasised the administration’s plans for tourism development and the economic health of the country. He highlighted President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s dedication to serving the citizens and noted that the finance minister and the Economic Council are working diligently to secure the foreign currency needed to repay both external and internal debts.

Focusing on tourism development, Faisal shared ongoing efforts to boost tourism in Huvadhu Atoll, Fuvahmulah City, and Addu City. Discussions are underway to initiate direct flights from various Chinese provinces to Addu City and to enhance connectivity among the three atolls through seaplane services.

Improved connectivity is expected to encourage the reopening of the Shangri-La resort, with owners taking the initiative once conditions are favorable. Additionally, discussions with Bank of Maldives and Maldives Islamic Bank are in progress to secure funds for developing tourism zones in Addu.

Minister Faisal also mentioned the administration’s special efforts to promote tourism in Laamu Atoll. Three islands designated for resort development have been awarded to a Dubai-based company, with one island already paid for. The company is expected to begin work on the resorts within a few months.
