President pledges to revolutionise sports in Maldives

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to enhance efforts to promote and revolutionise sports in the Maldives. He made the remarks during the Flag Bearer Awarding Ceremony for Team Maldives at the Paris 2024 Olympics, held at the President's Office.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Dr. Muizzu highlighted that five Maldivian athletes will represent the country at the Paris Olympics. He noted that their participation is a significant boost for sports promotion in the Maldives and encouraged them to make a strong impression on the international stage. He also expressed confidence in their ability to excel and bring pride to the nation.

Additionally, President Muizzu emphasised that the hard work of the athletes has paved the way for future opportunities and underscored his commitment to developing sports infrastructure and promoting athletics on a global scale. He also announced that next year's budget would prioritise enhancing sports facilities and infrastructure, aiming for growth in the sector.

During the ceremony, President Muizzu presented the Maldivian flag to Fathimath Dheema Ali and Ibadulla Adam, who will carry it at the upcoming Olympic Games. The Maldives contingent will be the largest in its history, competing in badminton, athletics, swimming, and table tennis from July 26 to August 11.

The five athletes representing the Maldives include table tennis player Fathimath Dheema Ali, who qualified through a selection round, Ibadulla Adam, who is training in Jamaica and will compete in athletics. Meanwhile, Fathimath Nabaha, the first Maldivian to participate in two consecutive Olympics, will compete in badminton, and Mohamed Aan Hussain and Aishath Ulya Shaaiq will compete in swimming. The Table Tennis Association of Maldives (TTAM) President Ali Rasheed will serve as the Chief of Mission for the Maldivian contingent.
