Relevant authorities to be consulted to determine how to classify councillors

The Parliamentary Committee on Decentralisation has announced that the classification of city mayors, atoll councillors, and local island councillors will be conducted in consultation with the relevant institutions.

The committee highlighted the absence of a formal classification system for councillors within the decentralisation framework, noting that this lack of clarity leads to numerous issues. As such, the committee emphasised the necessity of defining councillor categories to address such issues.

Parliamentarian Ahmed Aifan proposed that the committee consult relevant institutions regarding the classification of councils. Parliamentarian Ibrahim Shifaz, supporting Aifan's motion, stated that the committee’s recommendation to the government would address existing legal gaps, especially as the government considers significant amendments to the Decentralisation Act.

Additionally, Aifan pointed out that mayors, city councillors, and atoll presidents are elected by the public through competitive elections. He, however, noted that the law does not define their categories, resulting in some individuals not receiving certain state benefits. He also stressed the need for advice from relevant institutions to find a solution.

The committee underscored the importance of reviewing the efforts and plans of these institutions. Members also suggested that a law should clearly define the categories, salaries, and allowances for councillors.
