Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has stated that the government will regulate the automobile industry to ensure it adheres to the laws and regulations of the country.
Speaking at the launch of the Male' Fahi Programme, Minister Ameen addressed the vehicle congestion issue in Male' City, calling for collaboration among all agencies to find a solution. He also emphasised that reducing the number of vehicles and curbing illegal activities on the roads would enhance safety.
Additionally, Minister Ameen highlighted significant actions taken under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu over the past eight months. He noted the discontinuation of previously circulated garage letters without actual garages, and pointed out that the roads of Male' have been misused as storage for automobile industries. As such, he pledged to address the issue, noting the increasing congestion in the city.
Furthermore, Minister Ameen committed to registering the automobile industry like any other industry and ensuring compliance with Maldivian laws and regulations. He said that future legal changes will formalise the regulation of the automobile sector and eliminate the misuse of the city's roads as a storage area for these businesses.
As part of the Male' Fahi Programme, several measures will be implemented to address issues related to the automobile industry. A recent survey identified over 1,100 unregistered four-wheelers parked on the streets of Male' and Hulhumale', violating regulations. As such, a designated area will be provided for vehicles from businesses to be stored on a commercial basis starting from August 1.
