A safe and secure waste management system has been established and brought to operations in Kinbidhoo, Thaa Atoll.
The waste management system was established under a special programme initiated by the government, with the assistance of the World Bank. The systems were officiated by the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim.
Speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the commissioning of the waste management systems, Minister Thoriq affirmed that the new system established in Kinbidhoo was a system which manages waste and other resources safely. Noting that the system was equipped with the latest technological advancements, the minister stated that the system is designed to manage various types of waste of the island separately. It will also ensure that all employees working to manage the waste a safe work environment.
Furthermore, Minister Thoriq envisioned that the establishment of the system will effectively address the concerns of the islanders, while improving the environment of the island significantly. The minister expressed confidence that the waste management system will assist in maintaining the island's cleanliness while enhancing the living standards of the residents.
Additionally, the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy stated that the island was facilitated with modern equipment required for effective waste management. It includes multipurpose balers, glass crushers and dustbins of various sizes. The ministry revealed that vehicles were also provided to Kinbidhoo Island Council to collect the waste disposed. Stating that a bio-waste treatment system was also established, the ministry disclosed that the system was capable of processing 200kg of disposable waste daily.
Highlighting that 65% of the waste produced in the nation are disposable, the ministry stated that the waste management system will play a pivotal role in enhancing the health and wellbeing of the society in whole. It also revealed plans to establish similar facilities in other islands if the systems prove to be successful. The ministry said that this initiative was an important step towards addressing the problems raised regarding safe and effective waste management and disposal.
