MET Office cautions against harsh weather conditions

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has cautioned against heavy rainfall and strong gusts of wind, from August 11 onwards. The cautionary warning was issued based on predictions that the Maldives will experience significant impacts from the south-west monsoon.

The MET Office has forecasted that most regions in the country will face intense showers and thunderstorms over the next five days. It further forecasted gusts up to 40mph to 45mph within clouds and rough seas. Therefore, it advised all seafarers to adjust their travel plans according to the anticipated weather conditions.

In response to this warning, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has publicised significant safety measures and guidelines. NDMA urged all individual to ensure that private property and the households items are placed such that the effects of the harsh weather conditions can be reduced. It also advised residents to reinforce their rooftops to withstand strong winds, store staple food and other necessities beforehand and prepare houses for potential floods. Additionally, NDMA urged seafarers to obtain necessary information on updated weather forecasts, the communication systems installed in the vessels and ensure that the vessel is equipped with equipment essential for their personal safety as well.
