Apron expansion project of Maafaru Airport handed over to MTCC

Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL) which operates the Maafaru International Airport has handed over the apron expansion project of the airport to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

During a special ceremony held to handover the project, the agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer of MTCC Abdulla Ziyad and the Managing Director of Island Aviation Ibrahim Iyas. The project worth USD 1.9 million is to be completed within 180 days.

The project will include demolition of 453 acres of existing fire road, removal of 18,660 acres of sand and preparation of subbase, as well as construction of a wearing course. It also includes grading and compaction work of 4,047 acres. The project also includes the installation of an airfield lighting system.

With the completion of the project, Maafaru Airport is expected to expand its services and create more job opportunities. Furthermore, the additional parking space is expected to increase the number of private jets landing at the airport. This will increase the number of tourist arrivals to the area, leading to an increase in the airport’s revenue, leading to economic growth in the island and area.
