Male' road development project will resolve flooding issues

Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib expressed confidence that the flooding issue will be effectively addressed upon the completion of the road development project, which is supported by China.

In a social media post, Minister Dr. Muththalib emphasised that the primary challenge facing Male' City is the inadequate performance of the existing drainage system, which fails to prevent road flooding. The minister noted that the road development projects will prioritise resolving these flooding issues sustainably. He assured that the project will include the installation of advanced stormwater management systems, designed based on comprehensive studies to ensure a durable solution.

Additionally, the project will incorporate a fire hydrant system and upgrade the current water and sewerage network cables as well. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has informed the Male' City Council that a research team will soon arrive in the Maldives to conduct a thorough assessment for the project.

The ongoing road development projects in Male' and Vilimale' are significant and transformative initiatives fully funded by the Chinese government. Practical work on the project is expected to commence by the end of this year or early 2025. Initially, the road developmental projects were to be undertaken under the government's budget. However, following President Dr. Muizzu's official visit to China, the Chinese government offered to cover the entire cost of the USD100 million project.
